Our position sent to the borough—Redevelopment project for the Institution for the Deaf and Dumb

Following the public consultation meeting on August 26 concerning the redevelopment project for the former Institut des Sourdes-Muettes, Héritage Montréal comments, requests, and proposals to the Plateau Mont-Royal borough.

From the outset, we were delighted to see - at last! - a proposal that would breathe new life into this heritage complex that has been disused for too long. However, we are concerned about certain aspects of the project, particularly in terms of interventions on the built heritage and the impact of new constructions and developments on its emblematic presence. Also, the project's implementation remains unclear as to the long-term guarantees for maintaining heritage components, beyond intentions.

It will be important to follow this issue closely. This is especially true given that this is one of the first applications of the "superpowers" granted by Bill 31. In this regard, Héritage Montréal greater transparency in the process surrounding this project and suggesting the establishment of an expert mechanism to support the authorities who will oversee and authorize the project's implementation.

In the northern part of the borough, the Office de consultation publique has been mandated to examine the future and redevelopment of an equally emblematic building of a different character - the former Van Horne warehouse. The first activities of this consultation will begin in mid-September. Be there!
