Before the second half of the 19th century, Montreal had no sewage system. In response to the record floods of 1886, the Corporation of Montreal launched the construction of three major structures: the Saint-Gabriel dike at Pointe-Saint-Charles, and the Craig and Riverside pumping stations.
These facilities, as well as the dredging of the river and subsequent construction of the Seaway, ensured that spring flooding was no longer a problem for neighbouring neighbourhoods.
The Riverside pump station was commissioned in 1888-1889 and remained in operation until the late 1980s. It remained decommissioned until the arrival of Les Forges de Montréal in 2000.
