Launch of Memento, a new platform for the protection of metropolitan heritage

Memento is your new platform to showcase and encourage the rehabilitation of heritage at risk in the Greater Montreal area.

This platform has existed in its original version since 2015 under the nameH-MTL. Heritage Montreal is now presenting this second version, with improved user experience and functionality:

  • The platform lists endangered heritage on an MWC map.
  • It creates alerts about heritage sites that citizens consider to be threatened;
  • It sheds light on the files monitored by Heritage Montreal ;
  • It provides citizens with information and tools to support their mobilization efforts.
  • Finally, Memento presents repurposed case studies, including inspirational stories, to highlight victories and successes;

To make it short : it is an awareness-raising tool, both federative and collaborative, powered by citizens, local organizations and historical and development societies, all propelled by Heritage Montreal.

A major new feature is that Memento now focuses on the heritage of the Greater Montreal area, not just the Ville de Montréal territory.

Discover the platform in the video below or visit Memento directly!

What is a Citizen Alert?

If they see an endangered building, citizens can visit Memento and create a page to inform and raise public awareness around endangered heritage sites and create a collective commitment for their preservation and enhancement. This page can be shared, viewed, and offers a space for discussion so that citizens can meet. It also provides links to relevant resources.

Why the name Memento?

The name Memento came out of a brainstorming session by the Heritage Montreal team. We were looking for a name that evoked memory and remembrance, that was international, and that didn't have any strong connotations or already be in use in the metropolitan area. After considering several options, we chose Memento because it is short and easy to remember.
In English, it means "an object that one keeps to remember a person, place, or event." That is what we want to do with the platform: provide a directory of endangered and disappeared sites, a space for collective memory.

Visit Memento and participate in the protection of the city's heritage!

Memento is funded under the cultural development agreement between Ville de Montréal and gouvernement du Québec, and by the Fonds d'initiative et de rayonnement de la métropole (FIRM), under the jurisdiction of the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine of the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation.

    Bravo! This platform is really well designed. Intuitive navigation, easy to use. But most importantly, the subject matter. Let's save our past.

    I am very pleased that this organization is present and willing to fight to save Montreal' great heritage. I only hope that politics won't carve through the great intentions and needed salvations of this great city? I also fervently hope that linguistic and cultural sides of the make up of our city will not contravene the more important mission at the heart of your organization? Congratulations and go forth in saving the richness and beauty of our great historical city. Jean François Laforte . NDG ,Montreal.
